Word of the Day -Grapple
Meeting Duration -– 12pm-1:05pm
Meeting Date - Tuesday, August 29, 2006

Another lively and energetic program began with a warm welcome to our guests Brittany and Angelia. Angelia Watkins joined us for the second time and we expressed our gratitude in hopes of more involvement.

After the Word of the Day and Invocation by Cynthia, we moved through business and into Table Topics. Two contests of note are coming up this fall and any member interested in participating should visit the District 52 site or contact Gayle Anderson for a flyer.

The table topics were handled by Joe and revolved around themes from the detective drama, Homicide -– Life on the Streets. Who would'’ve guessed a television could spawn so many topics of discussion?

Kathy Hendry led off the prepared speeches portion of the second half of our meeting and urged us to try a little kindness. Kathy has one speech to go to achieve her CC (Competent Communicator) and informed the audience that next week we'’d receive that one. Always an interesting storyteller, we can't wait to hear it (Speech 10 - Inspire Your Audience).

Bertha Bruner, our Vice President of Education, gave the second speech from the Communication and Leadership Program (Speech 2 - Organize Your Speech) that tied in beautifully with her position. "“You've Joined, Now What?"” took the audience on an interesting journey through the process of joining Toastmasters and the steps that follow.

Two distinguished Toastmasters were in attendance today. Pauline M. Lee, ATMG and David Schlesinger, CTM. Both shared brief experiences in how the club benefits them (David'’s interview story was great!) or their prior role in the club. Having our former member and officers join us is very much appreciated and a lifeline in keeping our club strong and vibrant.

Next week's speeches
Joe Simpson -Toys on the Lawn (Speech 5 - Your Body Speaks)
Kathy Hendry (Speech 10 - Inspire Your Audience)
Angelina (Speech 1 -– Icebreaker)

A Warm Welcome and an Invitation

Toastmasters @ Metro Weekly (TMW) our club newsletter. In an effort to save trees, which creates a healthier environment, we've decided to go paperless. TMW is a recap of our club meetings held at the Metro Headquarters Building in downtown Los Angeles. Published the day after our Tuesday gathering at noon, members and guests can get a recap of the program presented.

Our program kicked off with a thought-provoking series of table topics centered around the problem of homelessness in downtown. A visitor, a young woman currently serving as an intern in planning, offered a stirring viewpoint on the matter (mental health care's role).

Jay's response to the issue led to a consensus that his table topic be turned into a 4-6 minute presentation. Little did we know that he would present it during this meeting.

Gene Hargreaves followed with another tour de force. His speech entitled "Just Rewards" showcased his dream, a tall tale about his experience at the pearly gates. As always, his speech showcased his mastery of emotion, vocal variety and command of the room.

Next Week's Planned Prepared Speeches
Bertha Bruner ‚– “You’ve Joined, Now What” 5-7 Minutes
Kathy Hendry ‚– “Procrastination Can be Fun‚…Yeah, Right" 8-10 Minutes

Officers
Gayle Anderson and Falan Guan - Co-Presidents
Bertha Bruner - Vice President of Education
Joe Simpson - Vice President of Public Relations
